Scientific Games announced a new partnership with Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products and Gracie Films to create a themed slot machine based on the longest running scripted television series THE SIMPSONS. The never before seen Gamescape cabinet was officially unveiled in Scientific Games' booth #1126 at the Global Gaming Expo. Every year, I try out new games at the Global Gaming Expo and write about a few highlights. Most of the slot games are things you’ll see in casinos in the next few months. Scientific Games Debuts THE SIMPSONS™ Slot Game New wide-area progressive link features characters and setting from the longest-running American primetime sitcom News provided.
If you’re alive (and if you’re reading this, we assume you are), chances are you’ve seen at least a few episode of The Simpsons. This incredible hit animated comedy aired its first episode back in 1989, and is still airing to this day, making it one of the most successful television shows of any kind of all time. While the series has long since passed its golden era of peak popularity and critical acclaim, Matt Groening’s characters and their adventures in Springfield continue to delight viewers throughout the world on a weekly basis.
It was only a matter of time before someone stepped up and licensed America’s favorite cartoon family for a slot machine. That task fell to Scientific Games and their subsidiary, WMS, who showed off their machine based on the franchise at the 2016 Global Gaming Expo (G2E). With lots of bonuses and plenty of hilarious interaction from the characters that appear on screen, this is an entertaining slot that every Simpsons fan will want to play.
Working at the Power Plant
The Simpsons is a five-reel slot machine that uses an expanded 5x5 layout that looks more like a grid than a set of reels. However, the main goal is still the same: you’ll want to make matches across the screen from left-to-right. The game is housed in the exciting Gamescape cabinet, which offers up an unbelievable array of graphical delights over several different screens.
The game is designed to allow you to travel to different locations: in some cases, the machine is decked out like a casino night at the Springfield Power Plant, with Homer, Lenny, and Carl hanging out in their classy tuxedos while Mr. Burns looks on in the background, while at other times, you can play in the middle of Moe’s Tavern. During the game, Homer and other characters will make comments related to what’s happening – or what could happen – on screen.
Across the reels, you’ll see a number of the television program’s iconic characters – beyond the ones mentioned, you’ll see several other men of Springfield decked out in formal wear, like Apu, Krusty the Clown, and Chief Wiggum – along with symbols such as donuts, three-eyed fish, and Santa’s Little Helper (the family dog, for those less familiar with the show).

Grabbing the Forbidden Donut
Like many games from this manufacturer that are based on existing franchises, WMS has been careful to throw in plenty of references to the series that will excite fans, especially when it comes to the bonus features. For instance, you might find yourself playing a random round of Monorail Madness, or making crank calls to Moe’s Tavern with the “Pranks a Lot” mini-game.
But perhaps the most entertaining of all is the Donut Wheel Bonus. Triggered whenever you hit four donut symbols in the four corners of the screen, this is an interactive free spins game which utilized the new motion sensor technology that has been rolling out on some of these Gamescape machines. Once the feature is triggered, you’ll be asked to put your hand over the motion sensor. You can then move your hand to catch different colored sprinkles that will drop for the top of the screen. These have various bonuses, such as locking wilds in place, adding more spins, or giving you a multiplier on each of your wins.
After you’re done collecting your candy, Homer will take a bite out of the spinning donut on the screen that appears above the main play area, letting you know how many base free spins you’ll receive. It’s one of the more interesting and engaging bonus rounds we’ve seen in a long time, and one that comes with plenty of Easter eggs for devoted Simpsons fans. There’s even a progressive jackpot that can be linked across many machines to give you yet another big prize to chase.

Don’t Have a Cow, Man
There’s really nothing bad to say about The Simpsons slot machine from WMS. Scientific Games has been building a huge library of brands for their machines as of late, but few have the power and instant recognition of this one. And we don’t many of them can be nearly as funny, either: this game is constantly referencing the funniest moments from the classic years of the cartoon, something that will delight fans at every turn.
Granted, if you’re not a fan of the show, you probably won’t be getting very much out of the experience of playing this machine, since a lot of the humor and the interesting features are geared towards those who truly love the citizens of Springfield. But just the gameplay alone is deep enough for anyone who happens to come across this cabinet, and for fans of The Simpsons, this is a can’t miss attraction at any casino.
An Entertaining Slot Themed on the Popular TV Cartoon
The Simpsons is already nearly 30 years old. The TV cartoon, created by Matt Groening, has been a huge hit around the world. Starring Bart, Homer and a host of entertaining characters, The Simpsons has inspired movies and now a WMS slot of the same name.
This game is big on entertainment. Cartoon sequences starring many of the characters have been created especially for the game. There are three angled screens – creating an immersive effect. One of the many bonuses uses an innovative hand sensor too.
Here are the entertaining features you’ll find in the WMS The Simpsons slots:
- Respin feature with a hold and spin-like system of collecting character symbols.
- Catch doughnut sprinkles for extras for the main free spins game.
- Randomly triggered monorail bonus which makes use of the 3 angled screens.
- Many smaller on-reel features, which can add win multipliers
- A choice of regular bets or ‘High Roller’ bets for enhanced bonuses.

Hand Sensor Technology: The Main Free Spins Bonus
To trigger the main bonus game, you need a doughnut on each corner of the 5x5 set of reels. This sets in motion two things before your spins begin.
First, you will see Homer’s hand in front of the reels. You’ll be instructed to hold out your own hand, flip it over, and watch as Homer’s hand follows your own hand movement. Next, doughnut sprinkles fall over the screen. You need to catch as many of these as possible.
Red ones give you extra wilds for each one you catch. White ones are for mystery symbol, blue for multipliers and green for extra spins. These are collected in boxes on either side of the screen.
A giant doughnut then appears, taking the form of a bonus wheel. This spins - and Homer takes a bite out of it – revealing the number of spins you win.
Before you spins start, wilds and mystery symbols are added to the reels. Mystery symbols all show the same winning symbol and change for each spin. Ideally, the wilds are mystery symbols will line up. This guarantees wins on every spin.
The Simpsons Slot Character Scatter Feature
This feature is also triggered by the corners of the reels. If you get the same character in each corner, the other symbols disappear (after a cartoon sequence). You now respin the reels to collect more of the same character. On the side of the reels you’ll see the prizes, which rise depending on how many you collect before you get a spin with no new ones.

Some spins will give you an upgrade symbol. This will increase the prizes for all of the numbers of scatters.
Random Bonuses: Monorail and Picks
The monorail bonus makes excellent use of the 3 angled screens. This is randomly triggered after any spin. You will see the screens divided into 3 horizontal tracks – where monorails go past. Each carriage has a cash win on it. When the monorails stop, you are awarded the amounts in the middle part of the screen.
There are also picks bonuses – again based on different characters. These are simple, giving you win multipliers or access into the main free spins bonus.
Setup and Betting for The Simpsons Slots
The reels in a 5x5 square, with a total of 50 win-lines. You can bet from 1c per line. If you choose the ‘High Roller’ option, you’ll get a comment from Homer (who sits on the left side screen while you play), plus more frequent bonus features. This adds an additional 25 coins for each spin.
There are regular wilds (the logo) on the reels, and a mix of character symbols and neon signs with cats and dogs. You’ll also find cans of Duff beer on the reels. When the reels spin, it looks like all the symbols spin independently. Each spin will see one symbol at random more prevalent on the reels than the others. Homer has the biggest prize.
Entertaining Design of the Simpsons Slots
Many themed slots are generic – with video clips the main way they tie-in. The Simpsons is very different. The cartoon sequences have been created to work with the game-play. You’ll get comments from Homer, entertaining cartoon clips and plenty of themed interaction.
The use of the doughnut for the bonus wheel (along with the sprinkles) is very entertaining. As are Homer’s doughnut themed comments during play. When you get a big win, you’ll see Mr Burns at the ‘Nuclear Power Plant Casino’ handing out dollars!
