History
The Iowa or Ioway people lived the majority of their recorded history in the territory of what is now the state of Iowa. Speaking the Chiwere dialect of the Sioux language, the Iowa referred to themselves as the Bah – Kho – Je which translates to “Grey Snow.” The name was thought to originate due to the ash and soot stained snow which surrounded their dwellings during the winter months. In 1883 an Iowa reservation was created in central Oklahoma leading to Tribal members establishing the Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma. Today the federally recognized Iowa Tribe is headquartered in Perkins, OK with a jurisdictional area covering parts of four Oklahoma counties. The Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma is a small Tribe with just over 800 members.
